Independent Reading: World Literature & Trailer

For quarter 3 this year, students are being asked to read a text from the world literature genre and to create a trailer for that book answering the prompt below.  Here are some resources for students as they are working to locate a text that fits into this genre:

Prompt:

How does the piece of world literature you have selected reflect a particular point of view and/or cultural experience* (cultural ideologies/customs/religious practices/superstitions/etc.)?  Create a novel trailer, using Microsoft Photos or a similar program.  Your book trailer should entice others to read your novel and inform your audience about the particular point of view and/or cultural experience that was revealed reflected in the novel.  *Should be a culture different than your own, the idea is that you are learning about a point of view and/or cultural that you are NOT familiar with.

This assignment focuses on the following common core standards and has been specifically designed to address these standards for students:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.6 Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products, taking advantage of technology’s capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and dynamically.

Here are the basic guidelines for the assignment:

Assignment:

Part 1: Select a novel from the world literature genre.

            Guidelines:

-         Novel should at/above grade level

-         Novel should be apx. 150+ pages

-         Novel should be brought with you to class no later than __________

-         Consult your local librarian for ideas

Part 2: Read and annotate your text – paying special attention to any sections that help to reveal a particular point of view/cultural experience.  Your annotations should answer the following question:

-         What does this section/quote/etc. reveal about a particular point of view and/or cultural experience.*

*(Note: you will be required to include textual evidence in your final assessment; however, these annotations will be for YOU in preparation for the final & not used as a separate assessment)

Part 3: After having read and annotated your text, work to create a novel trailer that addresses the prompt: How does the piece of world literature you have selected reflect a particular point of view and/or cultural experience (cultural ideologies/customs/religious practices/superstitions/etc.)?  Create a novel trailer, using MovieMaker or a similar program, advertising your novel and answering the prompt above.

            Requirements/Hints:

- create a separate folder for this assignment & save ALL (Microsoft Pictures file, images, narration, music, etc.) parts of the trailer there

- make certain to use royalty-free music/music following publication guidelines that contributes to the particular point of view and/or cultural experience present in your novel

- select and/or create high-quality graphics (no pixilation/watermarks) that contribute to the particular point of view and/or cultural experience present in your novel

- integrate a minimum of 4 pieces of evidence (quotes/paraphrase/summarize) that contribute to the particular point of view and/or cultural experience present in your novel on text slides that you create

- don’t give away the ending to the book – keep your viewer intrigued

- consider integration of other text slides of your creation and/or narration with the book/author, analysis of  revelation about point of view/cultural experience, etc.

- your trailer MUST be no shorter than 45 seconds and no longer than 90 seconds

- your trailer MUST be fully finalized and work without your assistance – test this out PRIOR to the due date!!!

- your trailer MUST be saved in its finalized version to the S://drive

- be creative!!!

Part 4: On the last day of the quarter, you will share your novel trailer with your class.  At this point, it should be able to run without your assistance.  Top trailers may be selected to be featured on the KR website.
